This year the Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins on June 6th, 2016. The prayer space is available all day in G106, near the Bookstore. Please help spread the word about this prayer space.
The following is a brief explanation of Ramadan, and what the month means for our Muslim students and colleagues. Ramadan is the month in which the Muslim holy book, the Qur'an, was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed. It is a month of special blessings and prayers. Ramadan follows the lunar calendar. Our Muslim students, staff, or faculty will be fasting, reading Qur’an and praying. Fasting during Ramadan is rigorous. To begin fasting, one eats and drinks before dawn. This meal, Suhr, has to sustain us until after sunset when the fast is broken at Iftar. During the course of the day, one cannot eat or drink at all. This can be tiring, especially during the afternoon. Tolerance, patience, reflection and contemplation are practiced during the long hours of fasting. Once a year, for thirty days, Muslims fast. This year Ramadan ends on July 5-6, followed by the major Muslim holiday, Eid-ul-Fitr, during which Muslims take time off from work and school to celebrate Eid with family and friends. Prayer is especially important during Ramadanbecause it is a holy month, so that Muslims receive more blessings from Allah while fasting.
Ramadan Mubarak!
